NPA rebels torch 3 copra trucks in Surigao Norte

MANILA, Philippines – Three trailer trucks carrying copra products worth P5 million were burned by suspected New People’s Army rebels in Surigao del Norte Monday evening, the military said Tuesday.

At least eight fully armed men flagged down the trucks on Pungtod village in Alegria town around 11 p.m., a statement from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division said.

Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Iringan, Commanding Officer of 30th Infantry Battalion, said the armed men fired successive shots in the air before fleeing.

He added that troops were currently conducting blocking ambush positions along the possible routes of withdrawal.

The local Bureau of Fire Protection personnel responded at the burning site and extinguished the fire and pulled-off the trucks towards the shoulder of the road, the report added.
